How to Deal with Haters
Written by Pace Lattin
If you are successful, you have to accept one thing: Haters.
The moment you start doing well, you are going to find that there are jealous people who have nothing better to do than spend their time trying to shame you.
For whatever reason, there is a percentage of the population that finds joy in pointing out faults in others. Something about their mentality is so screwed up that they will spend almost every waking moment focused on other people’s business.
The more successful you are, the harder they will work to knock you down, because your success is an affront to their own failure.
Perhaps at one time in their life these haters had potential, but for whatever reason they miserably failed. Most of these guys in a previous era would have been relegated to sitting in the street while picking lice out of their hair and throwing their shit at people passing by.
Many of them will be famous in the future for being the crazy guy everyone talks about and wonders how he ended up in an insane asylum after being caught chasing down cats thinking he was a Chihuahua.
The internet and facebook has unfortunately given these guys a forum to speak out and be heard.
The first thing to remember about haters is that no one really takes them seriously. They create drama and often are extremely abusive, but that’s about it. While sometimes their obsessiveness crosses the line to stalking, most of them are just harmless people who have nothing better to do. It’s good to remember that 99% of them are not successful at anything, and their life sucks. They want to prove they are doing ok and that they could be successful by attacking others who are much more successful and pointing their flaws. They deep down inside want to be the people they attack, which is why they obsess over them like a jaded lover.
We all know who they are in real life: they are the guy or gal who wont stop talking about how much money they made, how they know so many famous people but they always need a loan, always need a place to stay, and always, always, are looking for new job or career. Nothing ever works out for them because they are never focused on doing well but always focused on other people’s shit instead of their own.
So most of the time, its important to just ignore the haters. It really doesn’t matter what they say or if they get it. Focus on building your business and success and ignore the attempt of the crazies to throw crap at you. If you don’t respond, most of the time the haters will either disappear into oblivion or find another person to be obsessed with.
Focus on those who get what you are doing and ignore those who don’t.
Sports Agent Scott Boras said, “If you are really effective at what you do, 95% of the things said about you will be negative. Keep your head on straight, don’t get emotional, take the heat, and just make sure your clients are smiling.” Simply put, if you are doing things right, people are going to go after you and criticize you. No one goes after failures, because no one cares what they are doing. Your haters probably don’t have anyone attacking them, because they aren’t doing anything remotely successful except annoying the shit out of people.
Perhaps the most important thing I’ve read about haters is to ignore what anonymous, hidden people say. According to Adam Gnade, “Anonymous” is not a real person. “Anonymous” is disappointment, weakness fighting back, and envy at its worse. The people who talk shit and complain and stick their nose in your business on the internet don’t hate you, they hate themselves.”
Lastly, if you want to be successful, do not expect everyone to like you. General Colin Powell said that, “Trying to get everyone to like you is a sign of mediocrity.”??There are two types of people that everyone loves, strippers and the guy who takes your order at McDonads.
So unless you are planning on wearing pasties or saying, “How can I help you?” to everyone, you better accept haters as a part of success.
